The Benefit Of Stillness
Lately I’ve been sparking up a storm.
I have these moments where ideas come to me that feel like a little spark igniting in my mind. Then I rush to the closest piece of paper or computer to sketch it out or jot it down. Here it morphs and evolves into something even brighter.
What I’ve been noticing is that when I give myself more time in the day to just be present and silent, that’s when these inspiration bombs drop. When I practice pure presence I get my boldest ideas. I observe synchronicities. I seem to download wisdom from nature or the Universe.
I once read that creativity comes from boredom. We really don’t allow for boredom in our lives much anymore (maybe more so with the Pandemic).
Remember complaining as a child that you were SO BORED and your guardian would tell you to go play outside. Then what did you do? You went out and used your imagination. You invented a new game, or envisioned new worlds.
Now it seems that every moment we find stillness, we fill it with a screen. We mindlessly scroll for what feels like minutes, but turns into hours. Sometimes I think, after one of these sessions, what did I really gain from that? Easy - nothing. So I went into my settings and turned on the Downtime feature. I set it to all the apps that suck the life out of me so that I can’t use them until after 4pm. If there is a pocket in my day that I want to play Penguin Isle (Pengis as I call them) without hating myself, I can pause the Downtime for 15 minute intervals so at least I am tracking my usage.
Sure, it’s hard to adjust, and I allow myself free phone screenings on the weekend, but I feel like I enjoy my own company more so now. I allow my train of thoughts to wander and I am exploring such interesting facets of my mind.
